12 Cozy Fall Books to Read With Kids 🍂📚✨

There is something extra magical about reading together in the fall.

Maybe it’s the earlier sunsets, the pumpkins appearing on porches, or the excuse to curl up under a blanket even when it’s still a little too warm outside. Fall has a way of making ordinary moments feel cozy—and reading together is one of the simplest ways to bring that feeling into your home.

You don’t need an elaborate activity or a perfectly styled reading nook. Grab a blanket, make something warm to drink, turn on a few twinkle lights, and let a good story do the rest.

Here are 12 wonderful books to add to your family’s fall reading list.

🍁 1. The Leaf Thief — Alice Hemming

Squirrel is VERY concerned when the leaves on his tree begin disappearing. Where are they going?!

This funny story is a sweet way to introduce younger kids to changing seasons while talking about change, worry, and the natural world.

Make it magical: Go on a leaf hunt afterward and see how many different colors and shapes you can find.

🎃 2. How to Catch a Witch — Alice Walstead

A playful Halloween adventure filled with silly traps and witchy fun. This is a great choice for kids who love Halloween but don't necessarily want anything truly scary.

Make it magical: Let your child design their own silly witch-catching contraption on paper.

🍂 3. Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn — Kenard Pak

This beautifully illustrated book follows a child through nature as summer slowly turns into autumn.

It has such a calm, peaceful feeling and is especially lovely for starting conversations about the little changes happening outside.

Make it magical: Take your own "hello autumn" nature walk and look for signs of the changing season.

🧹 4. Room on the Broom — Julia Donaldson

A witch, a broom, a dragon and a group of unlikely friends make this one of my favorite not-too-spooky Halloween stories.

It's funny, rhythmic and wonderful to read aloud.

Make it magical: Wear witch hats while you read it. Yes, adults too. 😉

🌙 5. The Little Kitten — Nicola Killen

If you love black cats and gentle autumn magic, this one is especially sweet. A little girl discovers a lost kitten during an autumn adventure, accompanied by beautiful illustrations and just the right amount of Halloween atmosphere.

Make it magical: Read this one by the window as the sun goes down with a little battery-powered candle nearby.

🎃 6. Pick a Pumpkin — Patricia Toht

This charming story follows the whole pumpkin tradition—from choosing the perfect pumpkin to carving it and lighting it for Halloween night.

Make it magical: Read it before heading out to pick your family's pumpkins.

🍎 7. Apple Cake: A Gratitude — Dawn Casey

A simple, beautiful celebration of gratitude, food and nature.

It's a lovely choice as fall begins moving toward Thanksgiving and a wonderful reminder to notice the small things around us.

Make it magical: Bake an apple treat together afterward and talk about three things you're each grateful for.

👻 8. The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt — Riel Nason

Instead of looking like all the other ghosts, one little ghost is made from a quilt.

It's cozy, charming and has such a lovely message about being different—and discovering that being different can sometimes lead to wonderful things.

Make it magical: Build a giant blanket nest on the floor and read this one from inside it.

🐿️ 9. Because of an Acorn — Lola M. Schaefer & Adam Schaefer

This beautiful book shows children how one tiny acorn can be connected to an entire ecosystem.

It's a wonderful fall read for curious kids who love animals and nature.

Make it magical: Collect acorns, leaves, rocks or other little nature treasures and create a fall nature table at home.

🧡 10. Fletcher and the Falling Leaves — Julia Rawlinson

Fletcher the fox becomes worried when his favorite tree starts losing its leaves.

It's a gentle story about seasons, change and discovering that something beautiful can come next.

Make it magical: Make leaf rubbings with crayons after reading.

🥧 11. The Very Best Pumpkin — Mark Kimball Moulton

A warm story about pumpkins, friendship and kindness that has all the cozy autumn feelings.

This is a lovely one for slowing down together on a quiet fall evening.

Make it magical: Make pumpkin muffins or pumpkin bread and have a little storytime picnic.

🐈‍⬛ 12. The Scariest Book Ever — Bob Shea

Don't let the name fool you—this one is much more silly than scary!

A nervous little ghost is convinced everything outside his house is terrifying, while readers can see that things aren't quite as frightening as he imagines.

Make it magical: Turn off the big lights, grab flashlights and have a silly "spooky storytime."

✨ Make a Fall Reading Basket

One of my favorite ways to make seasonal reading feel special is to create a fall book basket.

You don't have to buy 12 new books, either. Check your own shelves, visit the library, swap books with friends, or add one or two new favorites each year.

Fill a basket with your fall books and add a cozy blanket, a little stuffed black cat or fox, a few artificial leaves and maybe a strand of battery-operated twinkle lights.

Then keep it somewhere your kids can easily reach.

Suddenly, choosing a bedtime story becomes:

"Go pick something from the fall basket!" 🍂

And that tiny change can make reading feel like an event.

🍎 Create a Weekly Fall Story Night

You could also turn it into a little family tradition.

Choose one night each week as your Fall Story Night. Make apple cider or hot chocolate, put on pajamas, dim the lights and let your child choose a book.

Some nights you could add an activity inspired by the story—bake something, paint pumpkins, make a leaf craft or take an evening nature walk.

Other nights?

Just read.

Because not every magical childhood memory needs to involve a craft, a themed snack and seventeen supplies from the store. 😂

Sometimes a blanket, a book and your attention are enough.

🍂 The Stories They'll Remember

I love creating little bits of magic for kids, but I think some of the sweetest childhood traditions are also the simplest.

A stack of library books.

Pumpkin muffins baking in the oven.

A child curled up beside you.

A black cat attempting to sit directly on the book you're trying to read.

And the inevitable…

"One more story?"

Read the extra story when you can.

Someday, these cozy little evenings might be exactly what they remember when fall comes around again. 🍂📚✨
