Little's Light: How to Find Joy in Grief
Sometimes the smallest souls leave the brightest light behind.
Over the weekend, I said goodbye to my precious tortoiseshell cat, Little.
For sixteen beautiful years, she filled our home with a quiet kind of love. She wasn't the loudest or the most demanding. She was the observer, the peacemaker, the gentle friend who welcomed everyone with soft eyes and an even softer heart. She loved without asking for anything in return, and somehow she made every room feel calmer simply by being there.
When the time came to let her go, I held her gently in my arms.
I stroked her beautiful fur.
I whispered how much I loved her.
Although saying goodbye shattered my heart, her passing was peaceful. In those final moments, time seemed to slow down. There was only love.
Then something happened that I'll never forget.
Outside the window, a beautiful butterfly drifted by.
Maybe it was only a butterfly.
Or maybe it was exactly what my heart needed.
In that moment, it felt like a gentle reminder that love continues in ways we cannot always explain.
Since that day, I've cried more tears than I can count. Some moments feel impossibly heavy. Other moments surprise me with unexpected peace.
I've realized something important.
Joy doesn't erase grief.
They can exist together.
My heart can ache for Little while still smiling at a sunset.
I can miss her deeply while noticing butterflies dancing through the garden.
I can cry while also feeling grateful for the sixteen incredible years we shared.
Grief isn't something we "get over."
It changes shape.
It softens around the edges.
It becomes woven into the story of our lives.
One of the greatest gifts I can give Little now is to keep telling her story.
As I write this, I'm already creating children's books inspired by her life.
Because she is worth writing about.
She was a cat who loved deeply, welcomed everyone, and quietly made the world a gentler place. I want her kindness to continue reaching hearts long after her tiny paw prints have faded from our floors.
Writing has become part of my healing.
Every memory I write down feels like placing another flower in the garden she left behind.
If you're grieving someone you love today—whether it's a beloved pet, a family member, or a dear friend—I hope you know this:
Take time to honor their memory.
Light a candle.
Write them a letter.
Plant a flower.
Create a scrapbook.
Tell their story.
Keep speaking their name.
Love doesn't disappear when someone leaves this world.
It transforms.
It becomes the kindness we offer others.
The compassion we carry.
The memories we share.
The stories we continue telling.
Little taught me that even the gentlest souls can leave the deepest imprint on our hearts.
She taught me that love is patient.
That quiet moments matter.
That simply being present is one of the greatest gifts we can give.
Her light will always be part of me.
And every time I see a butterfly dancing through the air, I'll think of my sweet tortie girl and smile through the tears.
In Loving Memory of Little
Our beautiful tortoiseshell girl.
A gentle soul.
A faithful friend.
A quiet comfort.
A peacemaker.
A heart full of unconditional love.
Thank you for sixteen unforgettable years.
Thank you for every purr, every greeting at the door, every peaceful cuddle beside us,
and every moment you reminded us what unconditional love looks like.
You will always be woven into the story of our family.
Your paw prints remain not only in our home, but forever in our hearts.
Until we meet again, my sweet angel.
I love you.
Always.
